How to Build build a sturdy and workable closet organizer, Do It Yourself way

Closets can easily become clutter without the proper organization. Many of us tend to "clean up" our living spaces by putting unwanted, or getting-in-my-way-things into a closet, whether we have the space to do it, or not. If you suffer from over stuffed closets that are constantly disorganized, then you definitely need a closet organizer. The following how to guide will walk you through the steps of building a closet organizer from the very beginning of design to the finished product.

Some of the most important components of building a closet organizer are your tools, fasteners, and materials you use.

Designing a Closet Organizer

The design you choose is important since it will need to fit whatever you are organizing in your closet. Closet organizers are often used for shoe racks, clothing, and linens. Closet organizers can also be made for books, DVD collections, games, or anything else you might store including boxes. When you build a closet organizer, consider the weight of the objects you will store on it. Your design should be appropriate for the weight you will place on the shelves in order to avoid breaking your new closet organizer.

Measure the space you have to fit your closet organizer once you have decided what will be placed on the racks or shelves. You can also have a dual function organizer with clothing, shoes, and cubbies.

The measurements found in the design stage will tell you how much wood you need to purchase. It is important to get the proper quantity and quality. Remember, the weight determines the thickness of wood you need to use. The fasteners you use should be wood screws. The length is determined by the thickness of the wood. Make sure your tools are charged, or that electric plugs are in good shape.

You will want to have a drill, hammer, screwdriver, level, tape measure, saw, pencil, stud finder, and paint brush. The paint brush will be for the stain if you elect to stain the wood.

Follow the design you have drawn out based on the measurements you have already taken. Measure each board and cut them until you have all of the pieces you are going to use. Pre-drill the holes before you carry all the boards and tools to the closet. Start by constructing the organizer’s outer shell, the three or four sides. It is often best to go with four sides to ensure the base is strong.

After the outer shell is complete, fasten it to the wall in at least two places on the upper shelf. Make sure you find studs so that shelves will not fall out of the wall later. Once fastened to the wall, begin placing in the additional shelves. If you will have a clothing rack, put the supporting vertical piece in first, unless the clothing goes the entire length of your closet organizer. Otherwise, begin with the bottom shelves and work your way up fastening each shelf in to the next support. If using adjustable shelves simply attach the adjustable metal shelving support.

By following these steps, you can create a closet organizer that is strong and fits your current closet needs. The design needs to support the weight of the stored items, which also lends to the materials and fasteners you will use. The finished product is only as strong as the materials.
